According to The Mental Health Foundation, there is a simple thing that can really help support good mental health… nature. Nature can really help put things in perspective; it can take the pressure off and bring calm, wonder and joy to our daily lives. Nature is the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week 2021.

We’ve been reflecting on how our camps play such a positive role in improving mental health, and getting outdoors into the fresh air certainly plays a part. Mental health is vital in living a healthy and happy life, and learning to understand how to improve your mental health is a skill that can be learnt from a young age. As parents, we were fortunate not to have the pressures of social media to contend with, time away from phones and reducing time spent scrolling and comparing can be transformational.

Here’s are the seven ways our experiences encourage our young campers to feel good:

1. Making new friends and connecting face-to-face without phones

2. Expressing themselves through new activities, creatively and with sports

3. Learning a new skills and feeling capable

4. Getting outdoors and enjoying the fresh air

5. Connecting with nature and taking part in bushcraft activities (available with Action Extras)

6. Being active and enjoying mood enhancing endorphins

7. Learning to relax and unwind with mindfulness and yoga sessions
